Bella Mente Family Newsletter 10-16-17

Dear Parents,

Short Term Independent Study

When requesting a short term independent study contract, please give ample advance notice so that the teacher will have enough time to plan and provide meaningful assignments during your absence. It is recommended in our handbook that you give ten days advance notice for any planned absence. While we understand that this much advanced notice may not be available in the event of emergencies, it is always appreciated when absences are planned ahead of time. Thank you for your cooperation.

Estudio Independiente a Corto Plazo

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Any time children come together, such as the beginning of the school year, head lice cases commonly increase. Please encourage your child not to share or trade personal items such as hats, combs, brushes, headbands or jackets. Please make sure to check your child’s head weekly for lice and/or nits (eggs). If you find head lice on your child, please treat them before sending them back to school and continue to examine all family members regularly. For more information on head lice or its treatment, please feel free to contact your school’s health office.

Earthquake Preparedness - The Great Shakeout Earthquake Drill

This week, millions of people will participate in the The Great Shakeout Earthquake Drill. Here at Bella Mente, our students will have our drill on Friday. We will simulate an earthquake and direct the students to DROP, COVER and HOLD ON.

Experts tell us that during an earthquake, it is best not to move immediately, but to protect yourself as best as possible right where you are. Earthquakes occur without warning and may be so violent that you cannot run or crawl. Likely, you will be knocked to the ground. You will never know if the initial jolt will turn out to be the start of the "big one". You should Drop, Cover and Hold On immediately!

Additionally, studies reveal that injuries and deaths caused by earthquakes in the United States over the last several decades, indicate that you are much more likely to be injured by falling and flying objects (lamps, book cases, glass, TVs, etc.) than to die in a collapsed building. Therefore Drop, Cover and Hold On offers the best overall level of protection in most situations

Discuss the material that is included for you in this hyperlink with your family. Ask you student about what they learned and what they should do in an earthquake at home, in a shopping center, etc.

Mr. Hank's Corner

This week I would like to just keep it simple by giving a few quick tips to keep your child healthy and coming to school.

  • Wash your hands frequently. Not only is this a Montessori practical life lesson and one that is stressed in the nutrition lab but something that should be practiced both in school and at home on a daily basis.

  • Eat those leafy greens such as kale, chard, arugula. Green vegetables are also a major source of iron and calcium for any diet. Swiss chard and spinach are not considered good sources of calcium, due to their high content of oxalic acid. Green leafy vegetables are rich in beta-carotene, which can also be converted into vitamin A, and also improve immune function.

  • Get plenty of rest. Too many children stay up too late each night causing them to be tired during the day and not able to focus.

  • Hydration. Drink plenty of water because it increases energy & relieves fatigue. Since your brain is mostly water, drinking it helps you think, focus and concentrate better and be more alert. As an added bonus, your energy levels are boosted. Add some lemon and basil to make your water fun.

Here is a great quick read written about my mentor Alice Waters. There are some great Montessori references in the article. It is so amazing to see so many of the children here at BMMA turn to eating better foods such as the zucchini muffins we made in class this week as well as wanting to come either to garden to work or the nutrition lab to wash dishes. Yes, I did say wash dishes. Here is the link to the article.

For the recipe go to our website later this week. The children said it was “Yum!”
