Mr. Hank's Corner 9/4/18

Welcome back to school everyone.

Now that we have been in school a couple of weeks I want to remind everyone about the importance having your child not only to eat breakfast, but to pack healthier snacks and lunches each and everyday. Why nutrition is important. Eating a balanced diet is vital for good health and well-being. Food provides our bodies with the energy, protein, essential fats, vitamins and minerals to live, grow and function properly. We need a wide variety of different foods to provide the right amounts of nutrients for good health. Also, water is very important for students to drink each day and we have a hydration station located right inside our MPR double doors where students can fill their reusable water bottles.

Did you know that in 1964, we produced 15 million tons of plastic and those numbers grew to a staggering 311 million tons in 2014 and look to continue to rise in the next 2 decades by almost double. Help our environment by cutting down on the single use water bottles and encourage the use of a reusable one instead. Also, Oklahoma State University did a study and it shows that in one school year students produce nearly 30,000 pounds of waste from just in the lunchroom areas from disposable lunch products alone. I encourage everyone to look at reusable containers, whole foods instead of bagged and processed chips, and limit the Lunchables to the best you can. Together we can all teach our children healthy habits that will make long lasting positive changes in their lives into adulthood.

Finally, starting up on September 20th here at BMMA we will begin the “Cooking it up with Mr. Hank” with a class on “Salads and More.” This has limited seating and will be a fun and exciting opportunity to indulge in some easy at home healthy food preparation as well as meeting other Bella Families. Look at the attached links for the first 3 classes.
