Mr. Hank's Corner 10/1/18

October is an exciting month from activities from it being “Farm to School Month”, our first Health Wellness Committee meeting on October 9th at 4 pm, “Walk to School Day” on October 10th, “National School Lunch Week” October 15-19th, the “Fun Run” and also more cooking with “Squash made 3 Ways” both on October 25th.

Support your local farmers and farmer markets this month by taking the time to shop at the Vista Farmers Market on Saturday from 8-1 pm. Located right in the courthouse parking lot on Melrose, this market this market is the longest running market in San Diego County.

Are you interested in coming to the Health Wellness Committee meeting and join in on conversation surrounding sustainability, wellness at our school, and being part of like minded individuals from students, staff, parents and community members? Well, if so October 9th at 4 pm come join me in the Nutrition Lab for our first meeting of the year. You could also stay after to attend our Board meeting and witness our Live Well San Diego Proclamation presentation as we become partners together forging forward a healthier community.

What are you planting in your garden at this time? I love to hear about it if you see me in the garden. Please share your stories. This time of the year is great to start your leafy greens in the shade and your root veggies in full sun. I love planting chard, kale, arugula, carrots, radish, and beets. Beets are a superhero when it comes to foods. These veggies can help with increasing oxygen flow in your body, decrease inflammation, increase memory, decrease blood pressure, make a great natural sweetener and also can be used as a dye and of course taste great with goat cheese or by themselves sprinkled with some salt and pepper. So what are you doing this month to take back your health everyone?
